As a grassroots movement, with a largely volunteer team, Breaking Through The Lens relies on the generous contributions of our community. Despite our program being held virtually during the pandemic, our events have been huge success. Our latest event "From a Moment to a Movement" was a highlight of TIFF's Industry Microsessions, hosted by Variety's Senior Entertainment Writer Angelique Jackson. 

We are seeking your support as we approach our 5th year, with plans to return as a physical event for Cannes 2022, sure to be our most impactful yet.

The facts:

• As noted in the 2021 Celluloid Celing report from San Diego State University, the number of female directors on top Hollywood films declined, with women comprising 17% of directors on the top 250 grossing movies, down from 18% the previous year. When the focus narrowed to the top 100 films, women comprised 12% of directors down from 16% in 2020.
• Few women were involved with directing major releases in 2021 – Cate Shortland's Black Widow and Chloe Zhao's Eternals were the only two female-directed titles among the year's top 10 hits in UK and Ireland.
• Only two women have won Best Director in the Oscar's 93-year history.
